Our full-time staff includes one physiotherapist, an athletic therapist/ kinesiologist, and a massage therapist. We also have two part-time massage therapists working alongside us and two office administrators. By functioning as a team we can better collaborate on assessments, diagnoses, plans of care and treatments.
Philip Ruiz – Physio
After graduating from Mount Allison University, Philip went on to complete his Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy from Dalhousie University in 1996. Shortly after graduating, he worked in Clovis, New Mexico then Durham, North Carolina and was exposed to other physiotherapy treatment approaches. It was during his time in the US that he first traveled to St. Louis, Missouri to learn about the philosophy of Movement System Impairment from Dr. Shirley Sahrmann at Washington University. Since then he has traveled regularly to St. Louis to further his education in approach to rehabilitation.
Since moving to Pictou in 1999, then opening Back to Basics Physiotherapy in 2001, Philip has continued with his post-graduate education. His advanced training has taken him down many avenues to better serve the people of Pictou County. He has completed Matheson’s Functional Capacity Evaluation course as well as Matheson’s Advanced Functional Capacity Evaluation and Work Hardening/Work Conditioning courses. He has his Certified Ergonomic Specialist Designation from EK Gillin & Associates Inc in Ontario. Philip has also taken courses on Gait Analysis and orthotic design, soft tissue release techniques, acupuncture, dry needling, and more recently courses from SmarterRehab using a sub-classification system addressing the diverse range of identified changes that occur following pain and injury.
He received his Diploma of Advanced Manual and Manipulative Therapy from the Orthopaedic Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association in 2016 and has achieved the designation of Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Physiotherapy.
When not at work, Philip enjoys exercise and working out being involved with his family. He takes every opportunity to get involved with his two girls in their athletic endeavors and he has been the coach for Pictou Academy Varsity girls soccer team for the past 6 years.

Deanna Taylor-Conners – Massage Therapist (New Glasgow)
Deanna Taylor- Connors is a registered Massage Therapist who joined the Back to Basics team in 2017. Deanna graduated from the Canadian College of Massage and Hydrotherapy in May 2017 with certification in both Arthritis and Neurology Clinic. Deanna is a member in good standing with the Massage Therapists Association Nova Scotia (MTANS). She has Certification in Introduction to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Standard First Aid/CPR level C. Deanna believes that therapeutic massage therapy is very effective in helping to improve physical dysfunction of the muscles, ligaments, tendons, and joints as well as improving circulation of blood flow and enhancing overall body function.
Tanya Ruiz – Office Manager
Tanya is the office administrator and receptionist at our Pictou office location where she keeps the clinic running smoothly by overseeing all of the day to day operations. Every client that walks through the door will have the pleasure of meeting and interacting with Tanya who has almost 20 years of customer service experience under her belt! She has been working alongside her husband Philip for 17 years after studying psychology at St. Francis Xavier University. A busy mother of two daughters involved in numerous competitive sports, Tanya recognizes the importance of properly managing injuries to support an accelerated recovery for the maintenance of a healthy physical and mental well-being. With this insight, Tanya makes it a top priority to book clients at the earliest convenience.
